An Overnight Visit to Holland’s Tulip Fields

The psychedelic fields stretched on either side of me for miles, and the spring wind that whipped through my hair was dusted with the sweet scent of hyacinths. Along the purple and pink hyacinths, red tulips, and yellow daffodils, a visual symphony played, creating a kaleidoscope of saturated color that flashed by in neat rows. During spring, the region known as Holland in the Netherlands becomes a sanctuary of spring florals, beckoning visitors with its joyous fields of color, elaborate gardens, and bike rides that revitalize the soul. In April, I stayed overnight in Holland’s tulip fields, which is considered the best time to visit. I enjoyed biking through dozens of bright fields, frolicking at a local tulip barn, eating at a fantastic local restaurant, and spending hours among the artistry of the famed Keukenhof Gardens. I left this short but impactful stay feeling an uplifting connection with nature and those around me.

Staying in Amsterdam and don’t want to drive a rental car? Consider a guided day trip from Amsterdam.

Bike Rental

The first thing you notice when driving into Holland, or in our case, Noordwijkerhout, is the number of people riding bikes. Bikes are the dominant form of transportation in the Netherlands, so there are many bike trails and rental shops to accommodate visitors. After my sister, her boyfriend, and I checked into our adorable Airbnb after a short road trip from Germany, we eagerly made our way to a bike rental location in the parking lot of Keukenhof Gardens. Renting the bikes was effortless; the attendant even gave us a map showing us the best flower-viewing trails. Truthfully, we were a little early in the season for full tulip blooms, but the hyacinths and daffodils welcomed us extensively. We rode along one of the designated trails, stopping many times for incredible photos of the luscious blooms, before pedaling to The Tulip Barn.

Photo Opportunities, Snacks, and Shopping

The Tulip Barn is where visitors can relax and enjoy refreshments among the manicured flower fields. I especially enjoyed a basket of creamy truffle fries with a bottle of rosé. However, non-alcoholic drinks like coffee and other snacks like pastries are also served in the greenhouse space and adjoining patio. The flower fields had plenty of blooms and Holland-themed photo ops, making the 10-euro entrance fee completely worth it. We took plenty of time frolicking among the rows of flowers and playing on photo props like giant clogs and wooden swings before the sun began its descent.

A Local Dinner at a Cute Restaurant

That evening, we savored another rosé bottle on our Airbnb’s porch, which overlooked a flower field and a serene canal, before heading to Como & Co. for dinner. The restaurant had ample outdoor space by a small lake and plenty of potted vegetation, creating a cozy ambiance. The flat iron steak with vegetables and a smoked beef marrow sauce was rich and tender. After a day of flower viewing and riding bikes, this was an ideal spot to relax and recharge.

The famous Keukenhof Gardens

The next morning, we got up early to visit Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower garden. With over 7 million flowers arranged and cared for across a lush 79-acre space, the gardens are a spectacular display of color and pattern. As one might imagine, viewing 7 million flowers is an immense yet inspiring experience. Beyond the intricately designed flower beds and arrangements, every corner offered something interesting to see or interact with. Trickling water fountains added a coolness to the breeze, a Miffy garden (a cute rabbit character famous in the Netherlands) added some pop-culture charm, and water-level placed stepping stones made for some nervous, joyous laughs. We were so entranced by the gardens that we didn’t even realize hours had passed before it was time to head up to Amsterdam to finish our trip.

I left the tulip fields and Keukenhof Gardens in Holland with fulfillment, tranquility, and gratitude. Because the fields only bloom in the spring, and Keukenhof Garden is only open for about 2 months every year, I felt fortunate to have been able to experience this rare pocket of joy. Like many other things in nature, flowers bring about such a strong connection between nature and the human spirit. The colors that shine from them can sometimes feel otherworldly, and their fresh scent is rejuvenating. Being among the people honoring this connection was an experience I will never forget.
